Random State Generator

Pick a Random US State

Pick one US state or several, using all 50 states or a chosen region. Washington, DC stays separate so it is not accidentally presented as a state.

Quick Setup

Choose the states you want to include, set how many results you need and generate.

How to Use It

  1. 1. Choose the state pool

Use all 50 states or narrow the list to the region you need.

  2. 2. Set the quantity

Choose how many states you want and use unique mode when you need different results.

  3. 3. Generate the result

Only include Washington, DC when you deliberately want it as an extra non-state option.

More Useful Guidance

Use all 50 states or narrow the list by region

Use all 50 states for a general draw, or choose a region when you want a more focused quiz or activity. Every state left after that choice has the same chance. Washington, DC stays separate so it is not presented as one of the 50 states.

Example: five states from the West

Choose the Western region, request five results and turn on unique results. You will get five different states from that region. California does not become more likely because it has a larger population; every state in the chosen region gets one equal chance.

Use the region filter for focused practice

All 50 states work well for general practice, while a smaller region can be easier for capitals, abbreviations or map work. If your lesson uses a different regional grouping, check the state list first so it matches what you are teaching.

State Generator vs Country Generator

Random State Generator is for the 50 US states and can keep Washington, DC separate. Random Country Generator works with countries around the world. For counties, cities or state capitals, use your own list in a general picker unless there is a dedicated tool for exactly what you need.

How the Result Is Chosen

Fair selection

Every state left after your region choice has the same chance. Population and state size do not affect the result.

Privacy

The tool does not use your current location.
