Random Team Generator
Make Balanced Random Teams Fast
Paste everyone taking part and split the list into random teams that are as even in size as the numbers allow. You can work by number of teams or by people per team.
Quick Setup
Paste one name per line, then choose either the number of teams or the number of people you want in each team.
How to Use It
-
1. Add everyone taking part
Add the full participant list before you generate. If somebody joins afterwards, it is usually fairest to run the teams again with everyone included.
-
2. Choose the team setup
Choose the number of teams when that is fixed, or choose people per team when the practical size of each team matters more.
-
3. Generate the teams
Generate the teams, check the final sizes and rename them if you want. When the numbers do not divide perfectly, some teams may have one extra person.
Useful Features
Balanced team sizes
When the numbers do not divide perfectly, the team sizes differ by no more than one person.
Two setup options
Build teams by team count or by your preferred number of people per team.
Editable team names
Rename Team 1, Team 2 and the rest before sharing the result.
Easy to copy
Copy the finished teams for lessons, matches, workshops or games.
When to Use It
Classrooms
Create project groups, PE teams or discussion teams.
Sports
Split a casual player list into random sides.
Workshops
Create breakout teams without assigning people manually.
Games and quizzes
Make random teams for competitions or party games.
More Useful Guidance
Random teams are not the same as balanced skills
The generator balances the number of people on each team as closely as possible, but it does not know who is strongest, most experienced or best suited to a role. That distinction matters. Use it when random assignment is the rule you want, not when the real aim is to create teams with matched ability.
Example: 17 people into four teams
Paste all 17 names and choose four teams. Because 17 does not divide evenly by four, one team will need an extra person. The generator keeps the difference as small as possible rather than creating one very large group. Generate again only if you intentionally want a completely new random assignment.
Choose the right sizing method
Use number of teams when the activity already has a fixed setup such as four tables or three courts. Use people per team when the size of each group matters more. If you mainly care about a target group size and what happens to leftover people, Random Group Generator is the better fit.
Team Generator vs Group Generator
Random Team Generator tries to keep team sizes as even as possible. Random Group Generator starts with the group size you want and lets you decide what happens to leftover people. Use Team Generator when the number of teams matters most, and Group Generator when the size of each group matters most.
How the Result Is Chosen
Fair selection
The generator balances the number of people, not skill or ability. Random teams can still be uneven in experience even when the sizes match.
Privacy
The names stay on the device while the teams are made.
Common Questions
Will every team have the same number of people?
They will be as even as possible. If the list cannot divide perfectly, some teams will have one extra person.
Can I choose people per team instead of the number of teams?
Yes. Switch to the people-per-team option and the tool will work out how many groups are needed.
Does it balance teams by ability?
No. It creates random teams and only balances the number of people.
Can I rename the teams?
Yes. Change the generated labels before you copy or share the result.
Can I make a fresh set of teams with the same names?
Yes. Generate again whenever you genuinely need a completely new random split.
Can I copy the finished teams?
Yes. Copy the teams after generating them and use the result for your lesson, game or event.
